A deadly confrontation between Cuban coast guard forces and occupants of a Florida-registered speedboat has left four people dead and six wounded, marking a dangerous escalation in maritime tensions between Cuba and the United States.
According to Cuba's Interior Ministry, the incident occurred when the speedboat was detected one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel, in Cayo Falcones, off the northern coast of Villa Clara province. When Cuban coast guard officers approached the vessel to request identification, occupants of the speedboat opened fire, wounding the Cuban vessel's commander.

According to Cuban accounts, the operation involved ten men who launched from Marathon, Florida, aboard two boats carrying more than a dozen rifles, handguns, nearly 13,000 bullets and explosives.
